Obituary

FORT Qu’APPELLE (Qu’A) — Alan Joseph Hustak, who was a generous contributor of articles and photos to the Saskatchewan Anglican, died on May 21, in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. He was 82. His obituary records, “He leaves behind a profound legacy as a masterful journalist, a devoted historian, a sharp truth-seeker, and a cherished partner.”

Hustak was born in Esterhazy, and moved between Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Washington, D.C., before attending high school at Campion College, Regina.

He worked for CBC radio and was the Quebec Bureau Chief for CTV National News, but was best known for his work in print journalism. He worked for more than 20 years for the Montreal Gazette, and also wrote frequently for The Globe and Mail.

Hustak wrote more than a dozen books, including Titanic: The Canadian Story, and was also a noted photographer.

While living in Fort Qu’Appelle, he wrote for the local paper, The Fort Qu’Appelle Times (Grassland News) and was a dedicated volunteer at the local heritage museum. His memorial service was held in front of the museum on May 30.
