ESTEVAN (Qu’A) — A “Taste of Ghana” was held at St. Giles Anglican Church on Nov. 2, 2025. More than 50 people attended as Rev. Dr. Leonard Botchway, originally from Ghana, and his family and friends, gave a presentation about their home country.
Rev. Botchway started off with the land acknowledgment followed by the singing of O Canada and the national anthem of Ghana.
Rev. Emmanuel Appiah offered a geography lesson, explaining where Ghana is located in Africa. He also gave a brief history of Ghana, including when the region was known as the Gold Coast, to when it became part of the British Empire, and how it gained its independence in 1957.
Botchway describes Rev. Appiah as “the leader of the Ghanaian community in Swift Current. He is like a father to me.” When Botchway first came to Swift Current, Appiah, a retired Presbyterian minister, helped him settle and supported him.
Rev. Botchway played videos that showed the sights, the people, and the landscape, as well as music and dancing, which showed the beautiful colours worn by the people.
The Botchway family also prepared a wonderful feast of many foods from Ghana, including jollof rice, waakye (rice and beans), kelewele (fried plantain), grilled turkey and more. It was a wonderful meal enjoyed by everyone.
Following the meal, the Botchway daughters sang the CeCe Winan’s hit Worthy of it All.
A Taste of Ghana was a wonderful event enjoyed by everyone who attended.
